bee hive, and Bigfoot. We crossed over a
suspension bridge that had "Danger, Travel at Your
Own Risk, and we stopped at Spanky's Club House for some
picture taking. It was a great day weather-wise, partly cloudy, mid
60's. When we returned back to our vehicles
around 4:15 pm, everyone had parking tickets from the
NJPD. APRIL FOOLS!!!! Thank
you again for participating in another different type of hike. I hope
everyone enjoyed it. After the hike we sat down in Hog Heaven in
New Philadelphia and ate well and relaxed. May the forest be with
you. - Greg Gottshall
P.S. BEWARE of the TICK Season, we had
4 people who found ticks on them after the hike. Use your repellents
and tuck in clothing and wear light colored clothing when
hiking. With the mild winter, I think the insects may be a little problem this year.

Woods north of Orrville. "Dear
Hikers, I would 1st like to thank all who showed up for the hike at
Johnson's Woods in Orrville 0n the 29th of January. Twelve people
showed up on that windy day. We walked on a boardwalk that led us
through the preserve of 300 year old trees. We did learn of a specie of
bird called an OVENBIRD. A lot of us had not heard of such bird. It is
also called a Water Thrush and is in the Warbler Family. It gets it's
name from it's nest building, it looks like an oven. Here we made jokes
thinking it was a type of chicken or Turkey served for dinner. We
walked around the preserve a couple of times, different ways maybe a
3mile walk. When we returned back to the parking lot it started to snow
huge snowflakes and covered the ground completely and beautifully while
we sat by a big bay window and ate. We ate at Dravenstotts in Orrville
and had a great time. Thank you again, may the forest be with you. Greg
Gottshall"

The sunny day, crisp autumn weather, and great fellowship made this a

participated on a 4.5 mile hike of The Sugarcreek, Fox Creek, and
Pioneer trails. Though a steady rain fell, the temperature
was 65
degrees and no one wanted to end early. The wildflowers were
in
bloom but rain-drenched. The trees and forest floor was lush
green and lots of moss and cool fungi covered stumps and
logs.
One hiker was “slip-sliding away” on one of the
bridges and
we hoped she was not bruised too badly as a result.
Afterwards we
enjoyed dinner at Campasino's near Strasburg.
May
1 (Sun) - 2pm - Day hike at Isaac
Walton led by Fritz and Alice Schmitthenner. There were 14 on
the
hike in Izaac Walton forest on Sunday, May 1st. We started
out
following up a side valley full of spring flowers including trout lily,
wild ginger, 4 kinds of violets and some large patches of the great
white trillium. We then hiked along the upper slope of the
valley
with some good vistas of the upper valley. We crossed the
valley
and hiked up the other side of the valley along a beech slope with some
large oak trees. The next part of the hike was along the west
side and north sides of the property through recently thinned woods,
some recent clear cut areas and finally along pine plantations to the
bluff overlooking Cedar Run. The slope of the bluff had some
more
large trees. We dropped off the bluff and followed the flood
plain for a while then doubled back to the upland. We
followed a
spring run, past a wheel chair hunter blind to an old house place with
a large patch of myrtle, an old bank barn site, a farmhouse foundation,
some very large Wisteria vines growing up to the tops of the trees,
another wheel chair hunter blind, and an old spring. We
followed
the spring run back down to the bluff and followed the bluff to the
Christmas tree road which took us back to the cars. It was a
nice
peaceful hike in the woods enjoyed by all. We ate at Jakes in
Wooster after the hike.

Mar
6 (Sun) - The winter picnic
in CVNP led by Paul and Dan turned out to be a grand time. There was
just enough new fallen snow to make the park a winter
wonderland.
After getting roaring fires going in the 2 fireplaces we set out for
the first hike. The morning was quiet and serene, perfect
weather
for a winter hike. The chili/soup competition was a lot of fun. Judy's
southwestern chili won first place, with Dan's soup hot enough to
warrant the fire extinguisher. After lunch was the afternoon
hike, Paul stayed back to keep the fires going. The snow
covered
ledges, trees, and all the icicles, were stunning, and the two deer we
spied lying in the snow watching us added something special. The fires
made for a cozy atmosphere where we ate leftovers, played cards, and
enjoyed each other’s company. Perfect ending to a perfect
day. Special thanks to the Mutchlers for the time and effort
put
into this special day.
Feb 20
(Sun) - Ken & Cherly led a day hike at Quail Hollow State Park,
Hartville, OH.
Jan
16 (Sun) - Sippo
Lake hike led by Joe
Ress. Monique
instructed the ladies on proper yoga technique as Harold (the cat)
wondered "who in the world are these people!???" Joe's
homemade
pizzas were out of this world, his home was a cozy, fun 1950's abode
and I can't thank him enough for having all of us there. The hike was
even fun! Temperature was around 26 with beautiful blue sky
(the
color of Joe's wallpaper) and white puffy clouds. It was a well
coordinated day!
